Winter Hair With Marco Pelusi

Winter and hair -- what do the winter months mean for your hair? Do you want to change your style, take better care of your hair, or go completely natural? Winter hair often correlates with hairstyles and haircare practices suited for the colder months. During winter, hair can become dry and brittle due to the cold air outside and the dry indoor heating. Sometimes, a brand-new hairstyle can be the answer, and changing things up during winter is fun. Or, you may want a subtle change and invest in taking extra care of your tresses. Whatever it is, only you know the answer. Should you cut, color, or add extensions? We decided to ask Marco Pelusi, a celebrity hairstylist and colorist who always has excellent advice! Marco is a fantastic stylist who knows how to stay practical at the same time. He also has his own line of hair care products that are of exceptional quality and will have new products launchimg in January.

Gemma Magazine spoke with Marco about questions regarding making a change during winter as well as taking optimal care of your hair. All the photos are a result of his beautiful work and product line.

Yes, it is winter. However, many women want to bob their hair. I'm referring to a cool, modern look. What are your thoughts on keeping it long until summer?

The topic of hair change!  Wow, it's a good one for sure.  With clients, I can feel it if, in their hearts, they want a significant change.  Sometimes clients chat about wanting a change, but it's more casual.  I can feel it if they are interested in a big drastic change.  So ask yourself - is this something you're feeling in your gut?  And if so, make the change.  But if still unsure, wait.  And regarding going shorter with cuts, generally speaking, I'd always recommend keeping a little more hair for winter and making a significant cut change in spring.

If a client wants to go blonde for the winter—not small highlights, but a full-on blonde look. What should they keep in mind? Also, do you recommend highlights or all-over color?

Generally, we recommend deepening the color for winter ... but there's absolutely nothing wrong with holiday highlights!  So yes - I say yes - since many women look good as a blonde! The thing to keep in mind is to maintain the hair's quality and integrity - so highlighting is a good choice - because overall, blonde can be a lot for the hair to take and quite a bit of maintenance.

Many women want to go from blonde to brunette during the winter. It sounds sultry for the winter. What are your thoughts?

Deepening, darkening, and enriching your hair color is always a good idea for the winter months. Redheads go redder and richer, blondes add lowlights, and brunettes go darker. We might as well embrace the seasons and make our hair work with the cooler temperatures.

Is it too drastic of a change? What would you suggest?

Regarding specifically going directly from blonde to brown, I'd start by asking your hairdresser to add lowlights to deepen the hair color bit by bit to see how you like it. This will be a gradual process and will be easier on the hair. But again, at times, we want a huge change, but this is rare. I say, 'Easy does it.'

My hair gets so dry in the winter. What is an optimal maintenance routine?

It's important to condition, condition, and condition the hair.  Did I mention conditioning the hair???!!!  During the winter, as often as you like, for as long as you want.  You can do it at every shampoo and do it weekly for a longer time, perhaps on a weekend.  I manufacture a beautiful lavender-scented, collagen-based conditioner.  Please explore Marco Hydrate Conditioner and feel free to use the 30% off code NEW30 here: marco® color hydrate conditioner with collagen color guard® – Marco Pelusi Studio

If someone is thinking of going natural and growing out my gray. What should I

expect?

It's a process.  But it can be done, as many women want this, especially starting with the pandemic.  I have a few clients who have kept the gray, and others wanted to go back to coloring -- but the best way to do it is with LOWLIGHTING.  As you let the gray grow, for a natural-looking transition, ask your hairdresser to put lowlights through your hair rather than putting color all over your head.  This will allow for a gradual transition rather than being startled and seeing a vast line of gray regrowth.  And, you may decide later to keep lowlighting rather than have the raw gray.  The low lighting is not nearly as complete as the all-over color.  There is a gradual, easy grow-out process with lowlights.

Again, change is fun and exciting regarding hair but do your homework first. Look at photos, ask your stylist for honest opinions, and invite your friends. In a week, you will thank them. As always, remember to take good care of your hair and use high-quality products that will nourish and enhance your hair. It might cost a bit more, but it is entirely worth it --especially as we age. Lastly, have fun with your hair. If you change things up and don't like it, there are many styling techniques to tweak it. However, that is a different article.
