Autumn offers a wonderful opportunity to try out new hairstyles! The cooler temperatures often encourage the choice of deeper colors and fashionable styles. As the season changes, many people feel inspired to update their look, making it an ideal time for a new hairstyle or a change in color. Additionally, fall signifies new beginnings and embodies change, whether it's going back to school or starting new routines, which can inspire a fresh hairstyle or color change. Refreshing your hairstyle in the fall can be a delightful way to welcome the season.
Marco Pelusi is a distinguished celebrity hair color artist, expert, educator, salon owner, and consultant. He is internationally acknowledged as a top Haircolor Authority, respected Platform Artist & Educator, and a creative Celebrity Haircolorist. Consequently, Gemma Magazine found it fitting to discuss with Marco the latest hair trends, hair color, and the best haircare practices for the warm and inviting fall season. Let's dive in!
The bob is reportedly a strong trend for Fall 2025, with sculpted, swinging, and sleek styles. Layers will also be popular. What do you envision for fall in terms of style?
I enjoy cutting a good bob and it's coming back. It's the look that I recommend to women when they're ready for a significant change. Yes, I predict layered bobs will be all the rage this fall. Layers in a bob create movement and ease, and can reduce the potential for hair that is shaped like a bell. The layers add softness and can make the bob work on just about anyone!

What styles do you recommend for clients looking to refresh their autumn look?
Speaking of layers, unless you have hair that is far too thin, generally speaking, layers are a great way to refresh your look for fall at just about any length. Most women with hair that is shoulder length and longer are fearful of going too short and adding layers is a great way to add some spice to a hairstyle. If you've got longer hair and you're looking for a change, but you don't want to commit to losing much length (as in the case of a bob), then get longer layers. It'll naturally add shine to your hair and give you more movement and volume.
Curtain bangs and baby bangs are also trending for fall. What is your opinion on getting bangs, and what should a client consider beforehand?
I love curtain bangs; they can be fun. I also love a sideswept bang because it offers a versatile style that's easier to maintain and style. Longer curtain bangs and also a sideswept bang can generally be cut longer and can soften facial features. Also, a fun thing about bangs: bangs can be a suitable replacement for Botox on the forehead! Bangs are youthful and can soften an appearance with little effort. But be ready to add additional styling time and a bit more maintenance on your hair when getting bangs of any kind. Also, ask your stylist for direction on how to style your hair. Baby bangs are specific: they have to be for a particular look. They are also a lot to maintain.

Color is essential. For fall, what colors do you see making an impact?
It's always beautiful to add all the colors of the autumn season into our hair - oranges, rusts, auburns, reds... adding these tones to a brunette or a red color is stunning and adds richness for the fall. For the fall, we want cozy, rich colors; typically adding the warmth of the fall season into our haircolor. Blondes can receive lowlights that are honey or golden in color to add depth and richness to their hair. Anything that adds warmth and richness is what we want for fall, as we move into the colder months.

Regarding going blonde, how can one transition summer highlights (which have been popular) to a warm, honey blonde?
LOWLIGHTING is the way to go here and it's so simple. Ask your hairdresser to continue adding the blonde pieces from the summer, but also add lowlights with GOLD. Golden lowlights are the way to go; we want to add richer colors to our blondes as we move into fall. And, the best part: lowlights are noncommittal. You can lowlight during the fall and winter and then go back to power blonde in the spring!

What should clients consider when choosing a fall hair color based on their hair type?
Get pieces of fabric and hold them up to your face -- get swatches of elemental silver and gold and see what looks best next to your skin. If the silver looks better, you're a cool season, and you won't look your best with too much warmth. If the gold looks good, you look good with warm tones; this is a good chance to add gold, red, or auburn into your hair. The fall colors are warm rusts, oranges, warm browns. Think of all the colors of the leaves on the trees in the fall.

How do seasonal changes influence hair care routines?
We need to prepare our hair for winter! You may need to temporarily switch to a moisturizing shampoo and spend more time with conditioner in your hair in the shower. The weather tends to shift; we must care for our hair. Whatever environment the hair is in, it'll mimic. So if it's still super hot and dry in the fall (like in the southwest), you need the moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. If you're in a cooler climate, and it's cooler and humid, then try a spray to block out the humidity.

Why would you recommend MPHC Products for maintaining hair health during the fall?
Marco Moisturizing Shampoo marco® color moisturizing shampoo – Marco Pelusi Studio is an excellent choice for fall. You don't need to use a moisturizing shampoo permanently; you can temporarily switch to a moisturizing shampoo for a few months. It's a good idea to change shampoos so your hair doesn't get used to the same one all the time. And Marco Hydrate Conditioner marco® color hydrate conditioner with collagen color guard® – Marco Pelusi Studio is a perfect in-shower conditioner for use after the shampoo, and you may wish to spend longer with the conditioner in your hair in the shower to give you more moisture and condition.

Are there any styling tools that are gaining popularity this upcoming season?
A big barrel curling iron is always good to have around. You can go an extra day without shampooing. On your dry hair, the day or so after you shampoo, you can throw in just a few big curls (like four or five total) with the iron, use a little spray, and go out for the evening.
